Silicone Adhesives
Aerospace Silicone Adhesives & RTV Compounds for Aviation
Silicone adhesives provide flexible, temperature-resistant bonding for aviation applications where rigid adhesive systems are not suitable. Their elastomeric properties accommodate thermal expansion, vibration, and structural flexure while maintaining flexibility across a range of operating temperatures, depending on the specific formulation. .
SkyGeek stocks silicone adhesive systems from Wacker Chemical (Elastosil) and Dow Corning, along with high-temperature firewall sealant-adhesives from Flamemaster. Products are suited to environmental sealing, component potting, vibration damping, and flexible bonding across commercial, military, and business aviation.
Types of Silicone Adhesives Available
One-Part RTV Silicone Adhesives (RTV-1)Single-component moisture-cure systems for environmental sealing, flexible bonding, and gap filling. Available in neutral and acetoxy cure formulations. Includes Wacker Elastosil E43 and Dapco 3300.
High-Temperature Silicone AdhesivesFormulated for continuous high-temperature service in engine nacelle, firewall zone, and exhaust area applications, rated to 500°F (260°C) or higher depending on grade.
Two-Part Silicone Systems (RTV-2)Catalyst-cured two-component systems for controlled cure and defined physical properties in avionics potting and encapsulation applications.
Silicone Sealant-AdhesivesDual-function silicone materials for environmental sealing, bonding, and gasketing, including window installations, access panel sealing, and electrical penetration sealing.
Aviation Applications
- Environmental sealing of fairings, access panels, and bonded assemblies
- Electrical component and avionics potting
- Vibration isolation bonding
- High-temperature bonding near engine nacelles and firewalls
- Flexible gasketing and joint sealing
Buying Considerations
- Cure type: Neutral-cure silicones preferred for metal, electronics, and sensitive substrates. Acetoxy-cure releases acetic acid during cure. Confirm substrate compatibility before use.
- Temperature range: Verify the product's continuous service temperature rating against the thermal environment of the application.
- Flexibility vs. strength: Silicone adhesives are not structural adhesives. Confirm the application does not require structural adhesive performance per the AMM or SRM.
- Cure humidity and time: RTV-1 systems are moisture-cure and require adequate humidity and airflow. Cure time varies with bead diameter and conditions.
